SORGHUM LIFE CYCLE
Planting
Sorghum is typically planted in late spring or early summer, when soil temperatures reach around 60°F (15°C). Seeds are sown 1–2 inches deep, and the plant takes about 5–10 days to germinate.
Growing
After sowing, the seeds sprout and the first true leaves appear in about 1–2 weeks. The plant begins to establish its root system, and this stage lasts around 3–4 weeks.
Vegetative Growth
During this phase, the plant grows rapidly, developing tall stems, and additional leaves. It can reach a height of 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3 meters), depending on the variety and growing conditions. This stage typically lasts 6–8 weeks.
Flowering
Sorghum flowers emerge around 60–90 days after planting, depending on the variety. Male and female flowers appear on the same plant but are pollinated by wind. This phase lasts about 2–3 weeks.
